I believe bunch of people there will confidently shout out Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, In todays global society, excellence in those area is inevitable thing. Nowadays, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, Indonesians, especially youths are facing the challenges in setting strategies to be potential assets of nations growth by developing their capabilities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past. Therefore, scientific platforms for youths have been the urgency for intensifying their capacity.
According to Global Competitiveness Report 2013-2014, Indonesia second biggest problematic factor is insufficient capacity to innovate (2.1 out of 5). This means Indonesians lack of peoples capacity on utilizing science and technology. In order to address this challenge, Indonesia needs feasible platforms to incorporate and engage science and technology within communities while bolstering the nations STEM workforce as one of nations growth causes.
Over the years, research projects in Indonesia have developed significantly. In fostering science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the proliferation research proposals/projects and state science fairs are growing in numbers all over Indonesia. Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) since our establishment in 1967 has put the significance of the science youth awareness and do appreciate their ideas, creativity and innovation. Envisioning of youth potent as development driven, youths are potential leaders who can in partner with adults to solve particular challenges and issues. Well-educated youths have been considered as avid users in utilizing science and technology.
Therefore, Bureau for Cooperation, Legal and Promotion (BKHH) LIPI provides supporting circumstances for young talent to run utmost research projects by intergenerational partnerships with adults through Youth Science Competition (LKIR). As the nations premiere science research competition for Indonesian students, since 1969 LKIR has been looking opportunities to promote excellence by encouraging young generation to undertake individual or team research projects. It stimulates youths understanding about the value of scientific study and informs their consideration of future careers in these disciplines.
Lets discuss why do youths and STEM bind tightly
Fostering the STEM workforce means enhance high-quality STEM experiences to inspire students about science curiosity which lead them to want to learn more. In some cases, studies of the STEM disciplines revealed that STEM can foster students ability to think critically about issues in a world that is now dominated by science and technology. Hence, successful STEM learning automatically creates potential young generation to make rational decisions for themselves, families and their own communities.
According to Friedman (2013), many different thought leaders researchers, policy makers, practitioners, and others have been involved in meaning conversations about defining a widen and inclusive vision of STEM learning. One of them is to design a STEM Learning Ecosystem.
This system encompasses schools and community to celebrate science spirit in common sphere. Setting up after-school and youths science club programs, attending youth science camp, science museums, or getting informal experiences at home to constitute a rich array of learning opportunities for youths on science are getting more EXICITING.
Furthermore, this ecosystem harnesses the unique contributions of all these different settings in symbiosis to deliver STEM learning for all children. Designed pathways enable youths to become knowledgeable, engaged, and skilled in the STEM disciplines. Stakeholders in a STEM ecosystem develop a shared vision and assess the strengths and gaps of their efforts to reach that vision.
